Spark! Children's Book Awards
Last term, we launched the Spark! Children's Book Awards in school, joining over eighty other schools across Kingston and Richmond as judges to decide which three books, from a shortlist selected by teachers, booksellers and librarians, will be the winners of the first ever Spark! Awards.
Judging will take place the week after the half-term break, so please encourage your child to keep reading the books in preparation for this. We’ll find out the winners at the Spark! Book Awards Ceremony in June.
You can find a list of the books, by age category, on the school website here.
The Sparks! Buzz Magazine has lots of information on the shortlisted books plus competitions and puzzles for the children — it's available in a page turning online version or as a PDF to download or print.
An announcement from the Governing Board
Thank you to all the families who voted in the parent governor election. The votes have now been counted and we are delighted to welcome Rebecca Normand, who has a child in Reception, to the Governing Board from 24th May 2021. We would also like to thank Alan Waterman, our outgoing parent governor, for his hard work and commitment over a four-year term. Alan has now been co-opted to the Governing Board and will continue as a governor on the basis of his extensive experience and skill set. You can find out more about the Fern Hill Governing Board on the website here.
Fire! Fire!
There has been a real buzz in Year 2 this week following The Great Fire of London Workshop. The children really enjoyed meeting Thomas Farriner, Samuel Pepys and King Charles II and taking on different roles to re-enact the key events from The Plague to the rebuilding of St Paul’s Cathedral. Gabi in Heather commented, “It was brilliant to meet Samuel Pepys and I learned even more about the Fire”. “I really enjoyed playing a boatman and rowing Samuel Pepys down the River Thames.” added Elena from Clover. Ella from Bracken enjoyed being a maid and trying to keep the baker’s oven alight, “It was fun and I got to do some acting!!”
