Reminders
Library Books
To help us with the book stock check and getting the infants’ and juniors’ library ready for the new academic year, please return all school library books by next Friday 5th July. The books are stamped with our school name and those which live in the juniors’ library have a small barcode on the inside front covers. For the last two weeks of term, children should bring in reading material from their local library or from home. Please be aware that any missing books will be subject to a £5 fine payable via Parent Pay. You will be sent a notification if this applies to you. Thank you for supporting our school libraries!
Illness
If your child is unwell and has vomiting or diarrhoea, they should not return to school for 24 hours after their symptoms have gone. This will help stop the spread of bugs across the school. Please support us with reminding your children how important it is to wash their hands with soap regularly throughout the day and not just rely on the hand sanitisers available around the school.
Medications & lost property
With the end of term just three weeks away, please remember to collect any medicines, including epi-pens and inhalers, which your child may have stored in the school office. Medications not collected by or on Friday 19th July will be disposed of. Don’t forget to have a rummage through the lost property bins in your child’s playground too. All lost property will be sent for recycling over the summer holiday period.

Plant Sale
Thank you from Mrs Dutra and her team of gardeners to all the families who supported the Gardening Club and bought tomato plants at their sale this week. Your support is very much appreciated.
Friendly Ferns
Friendly Ferns is a lunchtime club, run by the children for the children, to provide a quiet, peaceful haven from the hustle and bustle of the playground. The children have drawn up a wish list of resources they would like and hope that some of our families might already have one of the items at home and would be willing to donate them: magazines for girls or boys, toy cars, Jenga blocks, a marble run. Donations can be left with the school office. Please mark them clearly for the attention of the Friendly Ferns! Thank you.
There are plenty of exciting activities taking place at school over the summer holiday period.
Pleiades, who run our outdoor PE provision, are running two, week-long camps over the summer break, the first from Monday 5th - Friday 9th August and the second from Monday 19th - Friday 23rd August. These camps are for children aged 4 to 12 years old and are available to book now with a 20% discount for Fern Hill pupils.
Masquerade and Mother Nature Science are also back at Fern Hill with their fantastic workshops. Masquerade are running two week-long performing arts workshops from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th July: The Little Mermaid for children aged 4 to 6 years old and the Lion King for children aged 7 and over. Mother Nature Science are running their Science Academy and Science Forces camps from Monday 22nd July all the way through to Friday 23rd August and offering a special discount of £10 off full-week places and £5 off day places. Please see our Holiday Activities at Fern Hill page for further information on all of these providers.
Well done to all the Year 5 children who completed Bikeability this term. The Kingston & Sutton Bikeability Team have announced dates for their Cyclist Training Scheme summer programme which runs over the holiday period. If your child is in Year 5 or above and is interested in completing their Level 1 & 2 course or Advanced Level 2 & 3 course, please see the flyer attached below. If you have any questions, please contact the team directly.
Fern Hill Music Evening
On Tuesday, Fern Hill celebrated its musicality. 26 children performed a fantastic variety of pieces, showcasing their skills across a range of instruments including piano, clarinet, violin, flute, guitar and voice. They were joined by our Juniors’ Choir, who treated the audience to a taste of their recent performance at the Rose Theatre for the Festival of Primary Choirs, and our Juniors’ Orchestra Group.
"I would just like to thank all the children that took part in the music evening this year. You all performed beautifully and it was wonderful to see so much emerging musical talent at Fern Hill. Every child demonstrated all our school values of inspiration, collaboration, empathy and excellence to ensure that it was an evening to remember this term."
- Miss Day, Music Lead
What an amazing achievement! We are delighted to announce that our Sponsored Run during Wellness Week in May has raised an incredible £1,500!
Half of this amount will be used to buy new playground resources for the children and improve their outdoor environment. The other half will be split between four charities which have been nominated by the children: WWF – Adopt an Animal, Cancer Research UK, Save the Children and Plastic Oceans.
After School Club Notices
Week commencing 8th July is the last week for after school and lunchtime clubs this term. To make up for the May bank holiday, Monday clubs will run their last session on Monday 15th July.
Week commencing 15th July is catch up week and the following clubs will be running a session to make up for one lost during the term due to illness:
Rugby – Tuesday 16th July
Hockey – Wednesday 17th July
Computer club – Wednesday 17th July
Cricket – Thursday 18th July
Start to Sing – Thursday 18th July
Please note that French lunchtime club finishes today, Friday 28th June. There is no French club next Friday 5th July. If you child attends Pottery club, two missed sessions will be refunded directly to you – there will be no catch up sessions.
Class Photographs
The proof sheet for your child’s call photograph was sent home this week – please check their bag! Photographs may be ordered by completing the proof sheet and returning it, with payment, to your class teacher. You can also order on-line – your class photograph is available to view and buy directly from the photographer’s secure website. You will need to use the password on your proof sheet to access the website.
If you have more than once child at Fern Hill, or would like to add the Year 6 Leavers’ photo, don’t forget to take advantage of the sibling/multipack discount available with option 2A and 3A. If you are ordering on-line, add each photograph you would like to your favourites (you will need to create an account or log in to do this). You will then be able to order a multi-pack from your favourites selection.
For all on-line orders, please leave your child's name and class in the ‘Add Instructions’ option next to one of your chosen photographs at the cart stage. This will allow us to deliver the photograph back to you via your child.
The deadline date for free delivery, and to make sure you have your order before the last day of term, is Friday 5th July 2019. Orders placed after this date will incur a delivery charge of £3.
If you have any questions, or did not receive a proof sheet, please contact the photographer, Mrs Bahara, directly via email at info@inTime-Photography.com or by telephone on 07931 593 169.
Adapting & Evolving in Year 6
As part of the Year 6 Science topic 'Adaptation and Evolution', we were lucky to be able to invite in Jo Lusted, a marine ecologist, who shared her knowledge about animals in their different water environments.
Max and Izaak in Oak Class wrote:
"In Year 6, we had a visit from a Marine Ecologist. She showed us some weird and wacky underwater creatures. The whole of Year 6 were engaged in the lessons and thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. Among the animals she showed us were squid, sharks, crabs and a sea worm. The children had to notice the features which could benefit them in their deep-sea environment."
A focus on Science...
This week, children in Years 3 to 6 were lucky enough to attend a fun and 'explosive' assembly run by Mr Axbey, a science teacher from The Kingston Academy. The children absolutely loved watching the experiments: liquid changed colour before their eyes and candle flames magically went out by themselves with plenty of loud bangs and crazy foam! The children all agreed how exciting and mysterious science really is...
Sports News
It has been another busy couple of weeks for Fern Hill sports!
Last week there were the Summer Relays at Kingston Grammar Sports Ground.
"The Summer Relay was a fantastic experience, from the running to the cheering on for team mates. The pitch was 400 metres and you had to run all the way around it! I felt tired half way round but as soon as I saw my team mates, I know I couldn’t let them down. It was an awesome adventure and I hope you get to try it someday too!"
- Lily T, Ash class
The Year 2 boys took part in a football festival at Kew AFC on Tuesday. The rain held off and the boys had a great time.
Thursday was the chance for a new sport to take centre-stage - Tri-Golf. Children from Years 3 and 4 went to Chessington School to have a go - the games needed hitting accuracy and control of the ball, something that they all got better at as they moved through the competition. Definitely a sport that could be coming to Fern Hill soon!
This week was the turn of the older children: Year 5s went to a basketball tournament at Tiffin Sports Centre and Year 6 competed in the KSSP Borough Rounders Competition. Reports on these will come next week.
Coming up we have the last two sporting fixtures of the school year - Table Tennis finals and an Orienteering competition. More on these next week…
