Easter Bonnet Parade
Well done to all the children for some incredible bonnets today at the Parade - definitely the best yet! Despite the wind (and even a bit of snow!), the children had a great time showing off their creations.
Message from Mr Scott
As we come to the end of this transitional term, I would like to express my gratitude to all our families for their continued support. We’ve eased back into the rhythm of school life as it was pre-COVID, and I am very proud of the children’s endless resilience, always modelling our values and making the most of the rich and exciting learning opportunities we can once again offer.
It’s been a real pleasure to welcome so many visitors back into school; we’ve seen a very busy calendar of workshops and expert talks this term. There have been lots of visits out of school too with plenty more planned for the summer term. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to talk about their profession and share their career journey with the Year 5 and 6 children at our Careers Fair; it was a great success.
In January, we joined the Kingston Educational Trust (KET). I am delighted that we have already benefited from the special relationship with The Kingston Academy (TKA) that membership of the Trust affords. Thank you to all the students from TKA who have supported our children in the classroom, with Homework Club, and as sports ambassadors in the playground. KET has just published its first termly newsletter which includes highlights of what has been happening this term at both Fern Hill and TKA. You can read it here.
One of the Fern Hill highlights is fundraising and I am always so impressed by the children’s passion to put the needs of others before their own. The PSA has certainly been making up for lost time with more great events - thank you to all the parents and carers involved for their dedication and energy in leading these and raising vital funds for our school. It was fantastic to have Bounce 4 Books back again and with it the opportunity to restock our library.
Literacy has been a focus for us this term, with World Book Day and the Spark! Book Awards, and it was timely to be able to welcome our new librarian, Mrs Rouillard. Mrs Rouillard will be working across both Fern Hill and TKA to oversee the running of the schools’ libraries and support the children in the choice of books.
This term, we also welcomed Mrs Fernandes as our new Finance Officer. Sadly, Miss Gillard, Chestnut class teacher, and Miss Allen, Foxglove class teacher, leave us today and we wish them all the best in the next stage of their teaching careers.
I hope you are all able to have a well-deserved break and that the children return after Easter reenergised and ready for the exciting summer term we have planned. Please do have a look at the key dates for next term, published here. We have a great deal to look forward to and celebrate together.
LEGO Robotics
This week, Year 5 enjoyed a STEM skills session with Andy from Beyond Blocks. Following this year's British Science Week theme of growth, the children built a LEGO model based on the subject of the Frog's life cycle, and learnt to program it to come alive.
"We made and programmed Lego to show the life cycle of a frog. We started by making a tadpole together. We put all of the pieces together carefully and that made a back leg that didn't move. Next we transformed the tadpole into a frog by taking off the tail and adding some wheels to the back legs. We changed the wheels in to legs, to make it look more like a frog. Lastly, we programmed the frog, using computer code and then playing the program to make the frog move!"
