Reminders
Sports Day
If you have a child in Years 3, 4, 5 or 6, please don't forget to complete the collection arrangements form linked here to let us know whether we will be dismissing your child directly to you at the Hawker Centre or from school. Please note that children will NOT be permitted to walk home alone from the Hawker Centre. All children will need a packed lunch on the day and should wear school PE kit with a t-shirt representing their Fern Hill House colour.
Your year group weekly news is published every Friday afternoon in your child's Home Learning Google Classroom. Home learning activities for the next half-term are due for Friday 12th July for the Home Learning Showcases.
Eco-Committee
Our fifth community litter pick of the year will take place tomorrow on Saturday 25th May and if you plan to join Miss Evans and the Eco-Schools Committee, please let them know here. The litter pick will take place from 10:00–11:15 am (meet at school at 9:45 am) and all are welcome! You can read more about Fern Hill's Eco-Schools programme and this initiative here.
The Committee have a half-term challenge for you! The children have been thinking about their biodiversity topic and created this video. They would love at least one hundred Fern Hill families to take part in this mini beast challenge, so please watch the video and join in! You can send a picture to the school office when we return after the break.
Fern Speak Summer Festival 2024
Our Fern Speak Summer Festival has begun! Fern Speak has been running for many years at Fern Hill and is a wonderful opportunity for children in Years 3 to 6 to take part in performance and public speaking. The festival is all about developing the children’s self-confidence, their ability to express themselves and, most importantly, to have fun doing it. Heats and auditions will take place after the half-term break with the finals on Wednesday 12th June. Parents and carers of children performing in the finals will be invited to attend. If your child has chosen to take part, thank you for supporting them.
Orders for the Summer Term
Lunches for next half-term are available to order through ParentPay now. You can view the menu here. There are 3 themed days planned: D-Day Celebration on Thursday 6th June; Superheroes on Thursday 20th June and American Independence on Thursday 4th July.
Please remember to order your child's school lunch by 8:00 am on the day, particularly for Mondays! If your child brings a packed lunch, please ensure it is healthy and nut-free. Children should not bring confectionery as a snack.
Spark! Pupil Competition
The Spark! Pupil Competition is now open. Children are invited to choose their favourite Spark! shortlisted book and create their own unique response...
They can be as creative as they like, but here are some ideas:
- Write a book review or design a book review poster
- Write a story or create a comic
- Bake a cake (send a photo)
- Create an artwork or model
- Create a story box for your favourite scene/setting
- Recreate the cover using sewing/collage/crochet
- Create a video book trailer
- Write a song & record it
There will be a book prize for the winner of each age category and the best entries will be sent on to the main Spark! Competition. Entries should be handed to your child's class teacher or Mrs Rouillard in the library by Tuesday 4th June - don't forget to include your name and class!
Book of the Week
‘Wildsong’ by Candy Gourlay
‘Wild Song’ is the sequel to Candy’s previous novel, ‘Bone Talk’, but it can be read as a standalone story. Set in the Philippines in 1904, Luki wants to be a hunter but the elders in her village expect her to settle down and get married like the other girls. So when she hears about the St Louis World’s Fair, she signs up to join the Igorot contingent and travel to America. At first it is an exciting adventure but soon Luki realises that she is expected to perform to the expectations of the Americans, who only see the Igorot as ignorant savages.
I’d highly recommend this to upper KS2 pupils - a fascinating book about a little-known part of history.

PSA News & Events
Dads’ Breakfast - Tickets now on sale!
The PSA's Dads' Breakfast will be held on Friday 14th June from 7:45 to 8:35 am in the Large Hall. You can book your tickets here.
This is a lovely opportunity for Fern Hill pupils to come to school with their dads, grandads, uncles etc. to enjoy a delicious breakfast and meet up with other families. It's a free event, funded by the PSA with cereals, toast, pastries, tea, coffee and juice all on the menu.
Due to space restrictions, only children currently attending Fern Hill (Nursery through to Year 6) can attend. No babes in arms or buggies please. Thank you for your understanding.
Each attendee should have a ticket, so, for example, if one adult is bringing two children to breakfast, three tickets need to be booked. We look forward to seeing you there!
Mums and other carers, if you can help with this event, please join the WhatsApp group. We would love a few more volunteers to set up and serve breakfast. Thank you!
