Welcome to Year 1
Building upon the love of learning fostered in Nursery and Reception, the children begin to really flourish as more independent learners.
Daily phonics remains a key focus in supporting the children’s growth towards becoming fluent readers and book-lovers, combined with frequent shared story-times and weekly guided reading to aid comprehension.
The children begin to develop their understanding of Maths and the number system.
Through carefully planned topic work, tapping in where possible to their own interests, the children enjoy creative, inspiring learning opportunities. From finding out more about how our brain 'runs' our brilliant bodies through our senses, and comparing ourselves as babies to how we look and behave now, to discovering how a tiny seed can possibly grow into a huge plant that in turn will produce tiny seeds, the children are given a sense of the awe and wonder of the world around us. We will journey into space with the first astronauts, and create our own magical lands based on traditional tales from around the world.
Our topic work is supported by exciting and engaging class outings and workshops, to fire the children’s imaginations.
Your child will explore Hampton Court Palace through the eyes of Henry VIII, learn about our feathered friends and their habitats at Bird World, and find out about all sorts of exotic animals when Zoo Lab visit the school. We will visit places of worship as part of our Religious Education curriculum, and explore the local environment around our school.
