World Book Day
What a wonderful day of creative character costumes and fun learning with author/illustrator Karin Littlewood. All of our children took part in story telling workshops run by Karin throughout the day. She was engaging and energetic, and the children were captivated by her stories. We will be purchasing some of her beautifully illustrated books for our own school library with money raised from Bounce for Books. You can read about the Daisy class activities online here.
Please take time to look at the attached document about World Book Day that contains details of why we celebrate it and how to spend your National Book Tokens.
Bounce for Books
The PSA have done a wonderful job today organising the childrens bouncing. All classes have joined in the fun and enjoyed bouncing as many times as they can for 1 minute. With sponsorship money raised we will be purcashing lovely new books for our school libraries. Your sponsorship is invaluable in supporting school resources needed to enhance the childrens reading experiences.
Please return your sponsorship forms and money raised to the PSA postbox in reception by Monday 13th March.
Thank you to the PSA and all parent helpers for another successful event.
Please note: Due to the activities in school this week our Celebration Assembly and Diamond Work for this week will be included in next weeks assembly and website updates.
March Maths Challenge
Fern Hill School has been entered in the Mathletics March Maths Challenge. The challenge will run from March 6th - March 19th. This is a national maths challenge focusing on children mastering curriculum activities and practising their mental maths skills (Live Mathletics). Prizes are awarded for top performing schools.
Class teachers will have set tasks for children to complete at home and school. Please encourage children to complete them. There will also be opportunities for children to practice at school with Mrs Seal running lunch-time drops in, if children want to attend.
We will let you know how we get on. Many thanks for your support.

On Tuesday, Year 4 were very lucky to have a visit from an Egyptologist. Taking a break from his day job at Cambridge University, Dr Nigel Strudwick came to talk to the children about 'everything Egypt'. As well as explaining the complicated writing using hieroglyphs, he showed the children how the numbering system was written, with amazing similarities to our current partitioning methods! One of the highlights was a video showing an excavation of a tomb in Egypt, detailing how pots can be reconstructed from the thousands of tiny pieces found.
"It was really interesting to see an actual excavation, in real life"
" I didn't realise there were different styles of hieroglyphs depending on whether they were carving or writing"
Hazel Class Assembly
Hazel Class took us on a trip to Ancient Rome for their class assembly this week where we learnt all about Roman daily life. The children in Hazel Class all worked really hard and gave a great performance - well done!
The team awarded the most points this week is Richmond
On Tuesday, the Year 4 Girls Football team took part in a competition at Chessington Community College. We played 6 matches, winning 2 games and we drew in another. We had the most extraordinary time ever! We all had so much fun even though we didn't win.

Congratulations to the Year 5 and 6 Hockey team who finished 3rd out of 20 schools in the Quicksticks competition at Surbiton Hockey Club. They all displayed fantastic individual skills in tackles and attacking play, and all came together through brilliant passing play to beat the opposition. It was great to see everyone working together as a team and improving their performance in each game.
They thoroughly deserved their bronze medals and I am sure the team will have many successes in this sport in their bright hockey futures!
Fern Hill were beaten by Grand Avenue in their first game of the tournament, but showed great resilience and determination in their remaining pool games to beat St Matthew's, Christchurch and St Joseph's with some convincing wins and great goal scoring. We then progressed to the semi-final against SASM. In this game we conceded 3 goals in the first half, but managed to score 2 in the remaining half to make it 3-2. Well done for all of your super team work!
The Breakfast Club currently have available spaces on each day of the week. If you would like to make an enquiry please follow this link to the enquiry form or pick one up from the school office.
