Lessons in Internet Safety
Safer Internet Day took place this week globally. The children in KS2 were taught a lesson about Internet safety, focusing on the power of online images and consequences of having an online presence.
The children have been very enthusiastic and thoughtful, and we have had some insightful and mature discussions but it has also revealed just how many of our children post online images themselves, either on Facebook or Instagram. Some of our children use their parents accounts and some have their own accounts. The majority of children post with parental supervision BEFORE something is posted or at least are checking with them what has been posted. A few children have YouTube accounts and post videos of themselves, where their faces are clearly visible.
We have discussed what effects an unfavourable internet presence might have on the children and on future job prospects, and we discussed what they can do if they are worried about images of themselves online.
We have reminded all children that you have to be aged 13 to have a Facebook or Instagram account, and that they need their parents to check privacy settings before they use any social media.
We are making you aware of what the children are saying in their lessons and hope you are able to reinforce our strong message of the importance of internet safety. Half term is a great opportunity to talk to your children about the safe, responsible and positive use of technology, and to help them create a kinder safer online community.
We have attached to this newsletter further information for parents and carers to help keep your children safe online. Please take the time to have a look and talk through internet safety with your children. A detailed checklist for parents is attached to help you guide your children.
Checklist in brief:
- I have asked my child to show me the sites they use
- I have asked my child to set their profile settings to private
- I have asked my child about their online friends
- I have set appropriate parental controls on my child's computer/phone/games console
- My child has agreed to tell me if they're worried about something online
- I know where to get help of i'm concerned about my child
Further information on internet safety can be found on the documents attached to this newsletter.
