Supporting Parents of Children with Dyslexia/Dyspraxia
Hillcroft College are offering a programme to help parents of children with dyslexia and/or dyspraxia support their child with school and homework. As a parent or carer for a child with dyslexia or dyspraxia, they want to provide the best possible support for them. Run by experts, this women-only one-week course, starting Tuesday 30 May during half term, enables mothers/carers to work with their child to develop the knowledge and skills to support them in school and with homework. For more information please click here.
Travelling Book Fair
From Wednesday 17th May through to Tuesday 23rd May, the travelling book fair will be visiting school with a pop-up book shop. At the beginning and end of the school day you will have the opportunity to browse and purchase from hundreds of childrens books suitable for all ages. They will be offering a 3 for 2 promotion. Every book sold helps to earn rewards that we can spend on free books and resources for our classrooms and library.
If you are available to assist with the sale of the books after school next week (preferable for multiple days) can you please inform the office.
You may be aware of the latest craze for fidget spinners. As usual at Fern Hill we like our children to enjoy playing and we are allowing sensible use of spinners at break times. However, if they are seen out of bags during class time they will be confiscated by class teachers until the end of the day.
Due to the hard material of these balls, they are likely to cause injury. Therefore we have banned use of these balls from school. Please ensure your child doesn't bring one in to school.
Sainsburys Active Kids Voucher
Last call for Active Kids vouchers. They are no longer being issued in store when you shop but if you have any lurking in your purse we are still accepting them in the school office. Thank you.
Accompanying your child to school
Please ensure that all KS1 children are accompanied into the playground every morning at drop off time, and collected from the playground at pick up. It is expected that KS1 children are always accompanied by an adult. Parents must not drop their children off on Richmond and leave them to find their own way to school. Thank you.
Year 6 SAT's
Well done to our year 6 children who have all worked really hard this week sitting the SAT's. They are being rewarded for their efforts today with a visit to Guildford Spectrum to participate in bowling and ice skating.

Foxglove Class Assembly
Foxglove Class did a fabulous assembly this week with the theme 'Under the Sea.'
They read their lines amazingly and sang beautifully. Miss Day and Mrs Dixon were very proud.
The overall winner this week is Richmond
There will be no orchestra session next week on Thursday 18th May. There will be a session on 20th July to make up for it.
School Lunch Reminder!
The order deadline for the second half of the Summer term is Monday 15th May.
The menu and order forms can be found on our website here. If you have any queries please email email@example.com.
As a school, we are trying to incorporate Music more into your child’s learning and during the week of the 15th May, there will be exciting Music workshops happening for all children.
A company called The Education Group will take the workshops. They have been performing workshops for many years and are renowned for their interactive, fun and engaging sessions. All their workshops are closely linked to the National Curriculum and as a school, we thought that this would be a great and fun opportunity to incorporate Music within a topic.
Each year group will have a different theme, which relates to their summer term topic. This will be an exciting way for the children to engage with their topic and explore musical instruments at the same time. It will be a highly interactive hour-long session where the children will learn many things relating to their topic, be stimulated, and which will support lessons to follow in class.
We would appreciate a small contribution of £3.00 per child to allow these workshops to take place. Payment should be made online via the payment facility on ParentMail by Friday 12th May. If you are not registered on ParentMail you may pay by cash or cheque made payable to Fern Hill Primary School. Cash and cheques should be posted in a named, sealed envelope in the letterbox outside the office.
Children in receipt of pupil premium support do not need to pay for this workshop.
Many thanks for you cooperation.
Fern Hill Music Evening (KS2)
Wednesday 12th July 6.00-7.30pm - School Hall
If your child is a KS2 pupil, you should have received a letter and form regarding our music evening in July. If you haven't received the form, you will find copies in the school foyer or print the attached copy. This is a fantastic opportunity for your young musician to perform to an audience at whatever level they are at. We encourage Year 6 to showcase their talents in particular as part of their end of key stage celebrations.
- Please compete the form FULLY and hand it in just before the deadline.
- Choose a piece that is already confident and remember - the voice is also an instrument.
- Piano accompaniment should be handed in, ideally with the form if required FAO Mrs Ingram.
- Backing tracks can be sent in CD format or digitally to the office FAO Mrs Ingram
Thank you. We look forward to a fantastic concert!
Miss Day and Mrs Ingram
Year 3 visit to Gatton Park
This week Year 3 visited Gatton Park in Reigate to investigate seed dispersal and learn about the artist Matisse. The children really enjoyed looking at seeds under the microscopes and participating in the 'Seed Olympics'. They improved their sketching techniques and learnt how to show feelings in their art work. It was a great day out in a beautiful setting!
From Plot to Plate
Our garden is really blooming now! This week the children have enjoyed lettuce and radish's from our garden with their school lunches. There are a variety of exciting fruit and vegetables growing that will shortly be ready for harvesting including carrots, beetroot, beans, strawberries, radish, potato and lettuce. Look out for our plant and produce sale coming soon.
Mrs Evans and her husband have put the finishing touches to our garden compost this week. It has a clear front so the children are able to watch the composting process. Many thanks to all who support our garden, we are very lucky to have the space and the volunteers to maintain it.
Summer Fair and Gibson Lane Boards
A letter was sent out this week via parent mail asking for your permission to have a Gibson Lane sponsored board up outside your property from 5th June for a three-week period. The boards will advertise our Summer Fair which is on 24th June and for every board we have up, Gibson Lane will donate £10. It’s a simple and easy way for you to help raise money for our school – last year we raised £890! If you can help, please complete the permission slip at the bottom of the letter (attached below) and pop it in the PSA post box in school reception by Friday 19th May. You can also email firstname.lastname@example.org with your permission and details (name and property address). There are spare copies of the letter in the reception area. Thank you.
Respecting our Environment
Sara, in year 3, is such a keen environmentalist that she regularly picks litter from the playground during her break time. This week she has produced this lovely reminder for others about littering. We have hung copies around school to encourage children to be as responsible as Sara is.
