Kingston Family Fun Day
Kingston Council is celebrating the completion of improvement works to Portsmouth Road and Queen's Promenade as part of the Go Cycle scheme with a family fun day on Saturday 22 April, 10.30am-2.30pm, next to Riverside Cafe, Portsmouth Road.
The day will include activities such as face painting, a bike market and penny farthing displays to celebrate the rich history of cycling in our borough. There will also be guided bike rides with our Go Cycle trainers, so bring your bikes and don't forget a bike lock.
Come and join the family fun!
We are now desperate for tissues for our classrooms. If you are able to donate a box to the school we would be extremely grateful.

A Message from Mr Scott
I would like to welcome you all back and hope you have had a fantastic end of spring term break. The summer term is action packed with so much creative teaching and learning to look forward to.
There has been a wonderful air of excitement around the school this week and it was great to see all the children looking so keen to learn.
In my whole school assembly on Tuesday, I commented that the children looked extremely smart and eager to do their very best. I also stressed that they needed to challenge themselves and take risks in their learning and set high expectations, aspirations, goals and targets for this term.
We have discussed with the children, this week, the importance being on time for learning at the start of the day and that there had been an increase in lateness during the Spring term. Please can you support the schools strong stance on improving attendance and lateness, by getting your children into school on time.
To raise the profile and importance of attendance amongst the children, we have challenged the children to be the best attended class of the week with rewards for the highest percentage.
We have high standards for attendance at Fern Hill and I am disappointed to see the unauthorised attendance figures increasing due to the numbers of families taking their children out of school during term time. We appreciate that children are unwell from time to time and that there can be exceptional circumstances for absences, but we ask that you think carefully about keeping your child out of school. There is a strong connection between attendance and achievement at school. Absence is proven to have a significant negative impact upon a child’s educational attainment.
Thank you for your continued support to improve the quality of teaching and learning at Fern Hill .
Parent Governor Election
You should have received a letter via ParentMail regarding the vacancy on the school’s Governing Body for a Parent Governor. (We have spare copies in the office if you didn't receive it). Should you wish to propose a candidate please do not forget that the deadline for notifying the school is midday on Friday 5th May. Prospective candidates should also submit a written personal statement (not exceeding 100 words) in support of their candidacy by this time.
Should you wish to obtain further information about the election process or about governance at Fern Hill Primary School please contact the Clerk to the Governing Body at the school at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Recruitment of Clerk to the Governing Body
The Governing Body is also looking to recruit a highly organised and self-motivated Clerk to join the team with effect from September 2017.
The Clerk to the Governing Body ensures the smooth running of the governing board: preparing agendas and meeting papers, taking and distributing minutes, giving administrative support, keeping records and up to date information on policies and date of reviews, and providing procedural and legislative advice to the governing board. They must have excellent organisational, and communication skills. It is a hugely rewarding role and offers a unique opportunity to work closely with the Chair of Governors, Head Teacher and other Governors.
This is a part time (approximately 40 hours per term), paid role covering four Full Governing Body meetings and nine Committee meetings per school year. All meetings are held at the school during term time. Full Governing Body meetings are held in the evening with a 6.30pm start while Committee meetings take place either during school hours or in the evening. The clerk is also expected to attend all relevant training events and briefings. The role would be suitable for somebody looking for a very flexible working arrangement.
If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity please contact the Clerk at email@example.com by midday on Friday 5th May.
The Fern Hill Hatchery
There has been so much excitement from the children and staff this week as we have witnessed all 10 of the living eggs hatching successfully. 5 female and 5 male chicks are living in their special incubator which will visit each class next week for the children to observe and experience chick handling.
The overall winner this week in School is Hampton
All clubs begin on Monday 24th April.
Payment for all summer term clubs must now be made via ParentMail. Cash or cheque payments can be made to the school office where a receipt will be issued.
There are still spaces in all clubs for the summer term, except the following which are full:
- Beginner's chess
- Choir and orchestra
Application forms for clubs are still available on the website and outside the school office.
Please remember to contact Mrs Tatum at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any queries.
May we remind you that music tuition starts in school next week, please ensure your child has their instrument with them.
Kitchen News - From Plot to Plate
We are looking forward to our St Georges Day menu next Wednesday when meat or vegetable pie will be served with mash, and a St Georges Day cupcake for dessert.
Once again the children have been enjoying the benefits of our garden this week, lettuce, onions, and parsley are currently thriving in our lovely spring garden.
Please remember to email email@example.com if you have any queries regarding school lunches.
