Curriculum Evening 2018/2019
Last year's Curriculum Evening was held on Tuesday 2nd April 2019.
The evening began at 6.45 pm with refreshments in the Large Hall, followed by four workshops which ran consecutively and covered a wide range of topics: teaching ‘maths for mastery’, the learning platforms available for you to use at home, encouraging excellence in behaviour, and how we design our curriculum to inspire a love of learning. Please see below for a summary of the content of each workshop. The presentations that were used are also attached below.
Summary of Curriculum Evening Workshops
Across the curriculum, our prime focus is to develop and deepen the knowledge, skills and learning capabilities of every child. This session will explain how we teach ‘maths for mastery’, an approach to help children develop a deep and secure knowledge and understanding of maths at each stage of their learning.
Home Learning Platforms
Parents and carers play a crucial role in supporting their children’s learning and a positive learning environment at home has a significant impact on how well a child learns at school. This session will cover three home learning platforms: Mathletics, Discovery Education Espresso and London Grid for Learning (LGFL), and offer advice on how you can use these platforms at home to encourage your child to love to learn. We will also discuss keeping children safe on-line, including the use of social media.
Encouraging Excellence in Behaviour
At Fern Hill, our purpose of developing the whole child and instilling a love of learning is underpinned by our values: Inspiration, Collaboration, Empathy and Excellence, which are taught to the children through the Diamond Rules – the 6 R’s. This session will give you a greater understanding of our Diamond Rules and Diamond Time system of reward and sanctions which we use to encourage excellence in behaviour throughout the school.
A Curriculum to Inspire a Love of Learning
A fun, inspiring and rewarding curriculum is essential to instil a love of learning and, at Fern Hill, we believe that both curricular and extra-curricular enrichment opportunities are the key to a child’s journey to becoming a successful and lifelong learner. This session will look at the many ways we can cultivate and nurture a child’s natural curiosity and support this journey.
