School Glossary

School Terms

HT : Headteacher.

DHT: Deputy Headteacher.

AHT: Assistant Headteacher.

SLT: Senior Leadership team.

MMT: Middle Management.

TA: Teaching Assistant. A TA will be class based to support all children in the class, or small groups of pupils, giving them close support and also assisting their teacher.

LSA: Learning Support Assistant. An assistant providing in-school support for pupils with special educational needs.

NQT: A newly qualified teacher.

INSET: In-Service Educational Training.

SDP: School Development Plan.

SIP: School Improvement Plan.

NC: National Curriculum.

Ofsted: Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. It brings together the regulation and inspection of day care and children’s social care and the inspection of LA children’s services, schools, colleges, initial teacher training, work-based learning, adult education and more.

DBS: Disclosure and Barring Service.  DBS is the result of a merge of the Criminal Records Bureau and the Independent Safeguarding Authority. A DBS allows you to work and help out in school.

Fern Speak:  Fern Hills own ‘in house’ festival. Fernspeak is about speaking in front of an audience; expressing yourself and developing self-confidence.

RBK: Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames. 

KMS: Kingston Music Service.

Peripatetic Teacher: A teacher who gives specialist instruction in a number of schools, for example music.

School Educational Terms

EYFS: Early Years Foundation Stage - Nursery and Reception.

KS1: Key Stage One - Years 1 & 2 (infants).

KS2: Key Stage Two - Years 3, 4, 5, & 6 (juniors).

SATs: Statutory national tasks or tests set by the National Assessment Agency (NAA) and taken by pupils at the end of Key Stage 1 & 2.

PPG or PP: Pupil Premium Grant or Pupil Premium. Pupil Premium is additional funding allocated to schools in England to support and promote the education of children. Normally low income, a parent in the armed forces, adopted or cared for.

SENCO: Special Educational Needs Coordinator

SEND: Special Educational Needs & Disability

SEN: Special Educational Needs: When pupils have special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision.

SEN Code of Practice: A guide for schools and LAs about the help they give to pupils with special educational needs.

EAL: English as an additional language.

PSA

PSA:  Parent School Association. The PSA organises events to raise funds for the school.

Mufti Day: Non Uniform day. Children can dress up in their everyday clothes.

CIN: Children in Need. BBC Children in Need Appeal – every year we raise funds to support the charity.

Governor Glossary

LA: Local Authority (formerly Local Education Authority).

FGB: Full governing body.

GB: Governing Body (or Board).

FRP: Finance, Resources and Personnel.

CAC: Curriculum and Achievement Committee.

CFC - Children, Families and Community Committee.

HSE: Health, Safety and Environment Committee.

LA Governor: A person appointed as a governor by the LA.

Parent Governor: A parent elected by other parents of children at school to serve on the governing body.

Staff Governor: The staff governor brings to the governing body an understanding of the school’s ethos and culture as well as a close, professional knowledge of its strengths and weaknesses.

Associate Member: Associate members are not governors, and do not have a vote at full governing body meetings.

Co-opted Governor: People who in the opinion of the Governing Body have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance of the school.
